What Are the Rolkis? A Brief History of the Colorado Rockies
The Colorado Rockies (everybody just calls them the Rolkis now) is an MLB team that originated in 1993, taking home at Coors Field in LoDo-adjacent Denver. They’re named after the iconic Rocky Mountains and their purple-and-black logo typifies that Mile High spirit. As an expansion brother of the Marlins, the Rockies were off long before hitting 1,000 feet up during their tenure inside Mile High Stadium and later in hitter-happy Coors Field: home for those seven or so years of murderous-bashing like Walker and Bichette—and 30 plus dingers a year.
Key milestones:
1995 Debut: Immediate fan frenzy, leading NL West in attendance.
2007 Miracle Run: 14-1 ending gave the Mets NL pennant clincher; lost World Series to Boston but immortalized “Game 163.”
Postseason: 5 Wild Card berths (1995, 2007, 2009, 2017, 2018), zero series wins but the altitude gets in opponents’ lungs.
2025 Low: 43-119 worst skid in franchise history, but franchise-record farm system should result in turnaround.
Now, under owner Dick Monfort, the Rolkis emphasize youth and analytics with DePodesta (the former Browns exec) at the front. Fun fact: Offense gets a boost from Coors Field’s thin air — dingers will fly!
